Philosophy Of Social Justice
The words “Social Justice” have come up countless times during my four year journey as a high school student and can be interpreted in many different ways depending on what value those two words mean to someone. To me Social Justice means equal opportunity for everyone and creating equal opportunities without causing harm or taking advantage of anyone. It also means being able to see when injustices are taking place and being able to act upon them in a way that will resolve them without causing harm.
When I first decided to attend Social Justice High School it was because of two simple reasons. The first reason being that it was the only school in the LVLHS campus that didn’t have a uniform requirement and the second reason being that it was the red school and red is my favorite color. The name itself played no role in my choosing this school, as a matter of fact I never really contemplated the whole idea of Social Justice until my junior year. During that year in my high school experience, I saw this school fight for what it wanted and believed in. I saw my peers, classmates, and teachers organize and execute protests to bring back members of our beloved staff and to bring back AP courses that had been taken away due to underperformance. Not only did we fight for what we believed in but we got back what we wanted without causing any harm and strengthened our reputation as a school.
Some obstacles that we face in trying to achieve social justice is the lack of people keeping open minds and voicing their opinions. The resolutions to the obstacles we face are hidden inside of us but people are afraid of what others will think. Not enough people want to help others, too many people have that “I’ll do me, you do you” mentality and that won’t help in achieving social justice. Not everyone can find solutions to issues on their own and need others to help assist them so people need to speak up and find the solutions together. I am passionate about helping others and finding equality for everyone and I can help do so by voicing my opinion to find resolutions and listening to others that have something to say.
The issue I have chosen of drug cartels and trafficking is a social justice issue because drug cartels have a huge impact on minorities and lower class areas in which the illegal production, selling, and purchasing of drugs is taking place. Drug lords and cartels have all the power in these areas and the people feel that they don’t have any power so they stay quiet in fear. They are also an easy target because of the social and economic situation they are in. Since drugs are an easy way to make money, many young people join the cartels unaware of what exactly they are joining. Drug trafficking is a social justice issue because it is a very known about topic, yet nothing is done to help stop it.
