The reason I decided to go with Drug Cartels for my Fire Project topic was because of the reactions I was hearing a few months back with what was believed to be the capture of drug lord “El Chapo” Guzman. Everyone reacted in a way as if “El Chapo” is an angel or something. As if this guy was everyone’s best friend. People were screaming “ Free El Chapo, free El Chapo.” Of course at the time I had no idea who he was but when I found out he was a drug lord that has killed people and tortured people my first reaction was asking why everyone wanted him to be freed. So I wanted to do more research into not only him but the drug war and to find out what really happens besides the selling of drugs and then to inform people that the fact that “El Chapo” is in prison is a good thing and that he shouldn’t be freed.
I think my fire project does a good job of informing people about the drug war on different levels. How is effects the world, the US, Chicago, and even the Little Village area. I would have like to found more about the Little Village area because then it would be intriguing to the people I presented to because it’s a direct relation. In order to fix a problem as big as the drug war you need to start off with a small group and expand it from there so if I could’ve appealed more to my audience at school then it would be easier to get them on board with making a change.
I would like for my audience to know that even if they themselves don’t use drugs they can still help with trying to stop the drug war because everybody knows people that either buy, sell, or use drugs and you can inform them of what goes on around the world as it relates to the drug war. You can inform others of the violence and crime that goes on to go along side drug trafficking.
Something I was very pleased with during my research was all the information I found that tied the drug war to the city of Chicago. When I first started the project I had no idea that Chicago played such a big role in the drug war. As a matter of fact I didn’t even know how much the US contributed to the drug war so being able to find out what exactly happens in Chicago that contributes to the drug war was a big shock but also very helpful for my project. As far as my grade I would give myself a low B to a high C because I left everything for the last minute and didn’t complete the project because I didn’t do the debate and controversy section because I ran out of time. Procrastination came back to haunt me at the end of this project. Which leads me to advice for future students doing this project. Don’t wait for the last minute because this project is very time consuming and you won’t finish if you leave it to the last minute. Also pick a topic that interests you because since the project is so lengthy and you spend a lot of time on it, you don’t want to get bored with your topic at any point during the project.
